Of special interest is jpeg2000, which allows lossless compression of images.
A good commandline utility for creating jp2 (and many others) while retaining georeferencing is 'gdal_translate'. The easiest method for Windows users to get gdal is to install FWTools (v1.62 or newer). The documentation on GDAL is aimed at programmers primarily, see the Utility page for end users.
